39-year woman of Kotputali in Rajasthan saved the life of her end-stage-cirrhosis suffering husband by donating 60 per cent of her liver. A 10-member team of doctors, including Dr Dinesh Kumar Bharti of Hepato Pancreatic Biliary Department at the SMS Medical College, guided by Principal Prof Deepak Maheshwari and Medical Superintendent Dr Mrinal Joshi, performed live liver transplant in a most complicated surgical procedure that lasted for 20 hours Wednesday,

The team of doctors began the live liver surgery at 06:30 am on Wednesday yesterday and met with success at 02:00 am ( on Thursday). This was a 3-phased procedure in which doctors harvested 60 per cent of liver from the doner woman, then they operated out the damaged portion of the 37-year-old patient’s liver. In the third and concluding phase the harvested portion of the wife’s liver was transplanted into the husband, Dr Bharti has said.

The 20-hour complicated and marathon procedure went on smoothly, in the postoperative stage the liver doner and the recipient have recovered well.

Immediately after the surgery both were on ventilator support, but recovered fast by the morning. Now, the couple is off the ventilator and both are out of danger, Dr Bharti said.

Besides, Dr Bharti, Dr Ashutosh Pancholi, Dr Poonam Kabra, Dr Mamta Sharma, Dr Mahipal Dhaka, Dr Geetansh, Dr Yogesh Modi, Dr Sanjay Morwal, Dr Raghuram and Dr Sauvik participated in the operation.

The patient was suffering from liver related troubles and complications of cirrhosis, he was leading a traumatic life for almost a year. Liver transplant was the only option for saving his life, when the issue of non availability cropped up, the patient’s wife came forward to volunteer for donating her liver, Dr Bharti said.

This is the 16th liver transplant surgery in the SMS Medical College Hospital here. While 3 of these surgeries were live transplants, the 13 others were performed on liver harvested from cadavers, he added.
